Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg6/9/2023 It was named East End Creamery and after they bottled the milk (and made the other products) they delivered it to homes all around Grand Rapids in yellow and blue trucks. His marvelous drawings beautifully convey a mix of the everyday and the extraordinary, as a quiet house is taken over by an exotic jungle.Ĭhris Van Allsburg (1949-) is an American illustrator & author born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In his second book for children, Chris Van Allsburg again explores the ever-shifting line between fantasy and reality with this story about a game that comes startlingly to life. Little did they know when they unfolded its ordinary-looking playing board that they were about to be plunged into the most exciting and bizarre adventure of their lives. so they thought they'd give Jumanji a try. The game under the tree looked like a hundred others Peters and Judy had at home.īut they were bored, restless and looking for something interesting to do. East of eden audio book6/9/2023 Richard Poe perfectly narrated this book. I will certainly visit the Trask family again. At the close of the book I was deeply sad to leave them behind and I find myself thinking about them often during the days that have followed. I saw in them all the things I see in the people who populate the real world. Adam, Charles, Aaron and Cal became my neighbors. Steinbeck has written each of them a profound and subtle touch which made me feel as though I truly knew them. They are people who will make you think and feel. You will both like and detest each of them. They are people you will find compassion for. What I will say is this: the characters are deep, complex, real, and flawed. I have no great insights into the Bible and am wholly incapable of doing more than mention to that aspect of the book. I won't be talking about the Cain & Abel theme. Or, perhaps, I was simply an idiot who denied herself a deliciously beautiful story! There are many wonderful reviews of this book that will talk about the symbolism and allegory found here. Perhaps I thought it wouldn't stand the test of time. Perhaps I thought it would be too difficult to enjoy. Perhaps I thought this classic would be dull and boring. I do not know why I have never read this book. While he is certainly that, both men defy easy classifications, except as survivors. I first heard about Cody Lundin when the producers of "Dual Survival" positioned him as a 'bush hippie' opposite army vet Dave Canterbury. Even so, in all of this, I feel like there is something more subversive happening. Lundin stress the need to practice before hand, to plan ahead for all the needs of your family, and to not let preparing for disaster to take over your life. I can see the value of this book for preparing someone for a potential disaster. The goal is to tell people how to survive when the systems that they count on to sustain modern life - for example water, electricity, and sewer systems (yes, he covers how to handle human waste when the toilet no longer works) - all break down. In the book he covers a variety of topics including food storage, first aid, self-defense, and how to dispose of dead bodies. While it seems like this would be a book for paranoiacs worried about society collapsing, Cody Lundin's writing style and the general style of presentation in this book would put off militia types. This book is written for suburbanites who are worried about how to survive disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Hays echoes of scripture6/8/2023 Hays chronicles the dramatically different ways the four Gospel writers interpreted Israel's Scripture and reveals that their readings were as complementary as they were faithful. Yet modern historical criticism characteristically judges that the New Testament's christological readings of Israel's Scripture misrepresent the original sense of the texts this judgment forces fundamental questions to be asked: Why do the Gospel writers read the Scriptures in such surprising ways? Are their readings intelligible as coherent or persuasive interpretations of the Scriptures? Does Christian faith require the illegitimate theft of someone else's sacred texts?Įchoes of Scripture in the Gospels answers these questions. The author of the Fourth Gospel states this claim succinctly: in his narrative, Jesus declares, "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me" (John 5:46). All four canonical Gospels declare that the Torah and the Prophets and the Psalms mysteriously prefigure Jesus. The claim that the events of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection took place "according to the Scriptures" stands at the heart of the New Testament's message. In the shadow of the banyan6/7/2023 In this sense, it remains true to the experience because ultimately the human spirit and our tenacity to live is the only story that matters in the thick of devastation and persecution. In the Shadow of the Banyan is a story that focuses more on the human spirit rather than a deep dive into the hellish nightmare that Cambodia endured. I saw a lot of my mother in Aana, Raami’s mother. As a Cambodian with parents who also survived the Khmer Rouge Regime, I initially started this book with some reservations and prejudgment, but overall I actually really enjoyed it and felt it was authentic to the country and its people. Despite the fact that the narration was that of a seven year old girl, I read the book as more of the author’s memoir and her retrospection. The closer you get to the end of the story, the more grisly the depiction of life through her eyes. Having just finished, I think the contrast between Raami’s flowery recount of life in the first half of the book was written intentionally to show the effects of war and genocide. I really had to will myself through the first half of the book, knowing it would take a turn at some point given the novel’s subject matter. This book was a bit slow during the first half and the prose at times painfully grandiloquent to the point where it felt forced. In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner |
